Our Story

Once Upon a Time…

Cuifen and Rushan share very similar stories but had taken very different paths to reach Data for a Cause. Both are environmental scientists who are familiar with analyzing geospatial data. Their reputation in handling and analyzing data spread far and wide, and both have been asked to assist in analyzing data, particularly from friends in groups that want to help civil society. However, there were several times Cuifen and Rushan had too much on their plates (as it happens) to provide help for these projects, and finding other people with the right skills and the same passion for these projects proved just as hard. If only there was an established network of people with the right skills and the passion for different areas of civil society they could tap into to connect the right people to the right projects…

The Idea

Cuifen first put the idea through to her networks on Facebook and Linkedin; could a group of people with skills in data analysis, the experience in working with geospatial data, and with a passion for improving civil society possibly come together to provide help to the groups that need it? Rushan, being ever eager to help, raised his hand to make this idea a reality.

After a catch up in a small eatery near Buena Vista MRT, the framework for Data for a Cause was born. While Cuifen is ever eager to be a founder of Data for a Cause, she has her time taken up doing other extraordinary things to help civil society, and has decided to let Rushan to take the lead on the project while she provides advice, guidance, and cheer-leading when she feels he needs it.
